About the service

What is a near-space cremains launch? A near-space cremains launch is a memorial service in which a small portion of a loved one's cremated remains are carried to the edge of space — the stratosphere — aboard a specially designed high-lift balloon. The journey is filmed and tracked, and a keepsake video of the entire event is provided to the family.

How high does the balloon travel? Our balloons ascend to approximately 30–35 km above Earth — well into the stratosphere, often referred to as "near space." At this altitude, the curvature of the Earth is visible and the sky transitions to the deep black of space.

What happens to the cremains? The cremains are released at peak altitude and vaporize upon re-entry into the atmosphere, leaving no debris or environmental trace. The process is eco-respectful by design.

Do you also offer rocket launches? Yes. Astral Rest offers both high-lift balloon releases and rocket launch options. We can help families choose the option that best suits their wishes, budget, and the spirit of their loved one.

How much of the cremains are sent up? Only a small symbolic portion of the cremated remains is used for the launch. Families retain the remainder to use however they choose — scattering, burial, keepsake urns, or other memorials.

The Experience

Will we receive a video of the launch? Yes. Every launch includes a professionally produced keepsake video of the event. This can be shared with family and friends anywhere in the world, making it a lasting tribute accessible to everyone who loved them.

Can our family attend the launch? Please contact us to discuss attendance options. Launch locations and logistics vary, and our team will work with you to accommodate your family's wishes wherever possible.

Can we personalize the service? Absolutely. Astral Rest tailors each launch to your preferences. From the choice of launch method to the commemorative elements of the service, our team will guide you through the options to create a memorial that truly reflects your loved one's life.

Is the launch tracked? Yes. The balloon is tracked throughout its flight, and tracking data is included as part of your memorial package.

How far in advance do I need to book? We recommend contacting us as early as possible to allow time for coordination, regulatory approvals, and personalization. Our team will advise on lead times once we understand your needs.

What if my loved one's cremation hasn't taken place yet? That's fine. You can begin the conversation with us at any stage of the process. We'll guide you through everything once you're ready to proceed.
