Helium-Based High-Altitude Memorial Launch Operations

At Astral Rest, safety, dignity, and regulatory compliance are foundational to every memorial launch we conduct. Our near-space memorial ceremonies utilize helium, a non-toxic, non-flammable inert gas commonly used in scientific and meteorological balloon operations worldwide. All launch activities are conducted with strict operational procedures designed to protect participants, airspace users, property, and the environment.

Astral Rest operates in accordance with applicable provisions of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR)

All launch operations are conducted by trained personnel using documented operational procedures and pre-flight safety reviews.

Use of Helium Gas

Astral Rest utilizes helium as the lifting gas for all standard memorial launches. It is more expensive but ensures zero risk for guests to the services. 

Helium is non-flammable, chemically inert and non-toxic. It is widely used in scientific balloon operations

Unlike hydrogen, helium does not present combustion or ignition risks during filling or launch operations.

FAA Regulatory Compliance

Astral Rest launch operations are conducted in accordance with applicable FAA regulations governing unmanned free balloons under 14 CFR Part 101. 

Launch Site Safety Procedures

All launches are conducted from controlled outdoor locations selected for operational safety and airspace suitability.

Launch sites are evaluated for:

  • local airspace restrictions

  • weather conditions

  • wind conditions

  • population density

  • nearby airports and aviation activity

Launch operations are not conducted:

  • during thunderstorms

  • in unsafe wind conditions

  • in restricted airspace without authorization

  • over congested public gatherings

Astral Rest maintains a controlled launch perimeter during operations to protect participants and observers.

Weather & Flight Safety Monitoring

Each launch undergoes pre-flight atmospheric and trajectory analysis.

Flight planning includes:

  • weather review

  • jet stream analysis

  • predicted ascent rates

  • projected landing zones

  • FAA airspace evaluation

Launches may be delayed or canceled if conditions create unacceptable operational risk.

Payload & Recovery Procedures

Astral Rest uses lightweight memorial payload systems designed to minimize environmental and operational impact.

Payload systems include, parachute recovery systems and GPS flight tracking. Astral Rest does not intentionally conduct operations that create hazards to persons, property, or aviation activities. Recovery efforts are conducted where feasible following completion of the flight.

Airspace Coordination

Astral Rest coordinates launch activities in accordance with FAA notification and operational requirements applicable to unmanned free balloons including:

  • provide pre-launch notifications

  • coordinate with air traffic facilities

  • issue flight information

  • monitor balloon trajectory throughout flight operations

Flight tracking and operational logs are maintained for launch documentation and safety review purposes.

Operational Personnel

Launch operations are conducted only by trained personnel familiar with:

  • FAA operational requirements

  • high-altitude balloon procedures

  • flight tracking systems

  • emergency response procedures

  • memorial handling protocols

Operational checklists are utilized before, during, and after each launch.

Respectful Memorial Handling

Astral Rest recognizes the deeply personal nature of every memorial ceremony.

All memorial materials are handled with:
